After five Fall try outs around the state soccer players are selected to a state pool for various age group teams. That group attends three mini-camps held in Fairbanks, Wasilla, and Juneau from which the final players are selected for the Alaska State Olympic Development Teams.
"We are creating state select teams to go and compete at the regional level at region 4 camp," said Frank Travato, now in his eighth year as state director of coaching for Alaska Youth Soccer. "It is great to bring more soccer to Juneau. The game is growing here. The youth numbers and competitive numbers are growing. For us it is just another step in growing the game here."
The regional teams play each other in front of National coaches who then select a national pool of players. The Alaska age group ODP teams will be selected March 1, have a mini-camp in Anchorage in May, and then go to the regional camp for play and possible national individual selections.
