Sophomore guard Josh Tupou is learning, along with his teammates, about the growing pains that come with being a young basketball team.
He said the Falcons boys’ basketball team continues to improve, but still has much to improve upon in its second year as a program.
“Every game is an experience for us that we have learned to grow on,” Tupou said. “We’ve been getting closer every game and have definitely become closer as a team.”
It’s true losses never feel very good, but what was it like to come so close to beating Juneau-Douglas on your home court earlier this season?
“That game was great. The intensity was really high and I’ve never been in a high-energy game before. It felt different and so much fun, but they pulled away in the last minute.”
What has this team’s maturity process been like this year?
“We’re getting better each practice, each game. We just enjoy being around each other. Even when we have a problem we’re always able to find a solution.”
You play soccer and basketball, so which is your favorite sport?
“I would say basketball, but soccer is still fun. I’ve been playing soccer since I was a little kid, but ever since I saw my cousins play basketball I just kept playing. It always felt good to dribble the ball, just shoot around and have fun.”
Are you an NBA or college basketball fan?
“I like both. I like Jimmer Fredette and BYU because I’m Mormon, but I also like the (Boston) Celtics and Rajon Rondo. I like watching both.”
What do you think about the Carmelo Anthony trade?
“I think it’d be a really cool experience to see Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony play, two of the best scorers in the NBA. It would be really cool to see that.”
So who’s going to win the NBA Finals this year?
What is your favorite thing to do in the classroom?
“I like American history. We do a lot of fun stuff and also learn a lot from (Gretchen) Kriegmont. We do lots of drawing, and I like to draw.”
What are your hobbies?
“I like to hang out with my family. I think it’s really important to hang out with your family, but it’s cool to hang out with friends and bond with them.”
