SELAWIK — Two residents of Selawik have been charged with disorderly conduct for dominating a radio frequency with obscenities and challenges to fight.

Alaska State Troopers say 31-year-old Mabel Mitchell and her 36-year-old boyfriend, Ralph Stalker, were arrested Saturday.

Selawik is community of 850 about 90 miles northeast of Kotzebue.

Troopers say the VHF frequency is the primary means by which village residents communicate with each other, especially if they can’t afford phones. It’s also the primary means by which residents request assistance for emergencies.

Troopers and village police on Saturday night made multiple requests to Mitchell and Stalker to end their disruption of the VHF frequency. Troopers say both were highly intoxicated when arrested.
