ANCHORAGE — Sen. Mark Begich says the nation should spend more on science, technology, engineering and math — known as STEM — education.
He has introduced legislation to create competitive grants to encourage states to promote those professions.
KTUU reports Begich told an Alaska Society of Technology in Education meeting in Anchorage on Monday that only 16 percent of America’s undergraduate degrees are in those fields, compared to 64 percent in Japan, 52 percent in China and 41 percent in South Korea.
Begich says Alaskans will need strong backgrounds in those fields to prepare for new jobs.
