Klawock girls sweep Yakutat

Jasmine James scored 17 points as the No. 5 Yakutat Eagles held off the No. 9 Klawock Chieftains for a 43-36 victory Wednesday in Region V-Class 2A girls basketball action in Klawock.

Rebecca Widdows added eight points for the Eagles, who completed a two-game sweep over the defending Class 2A state champions with Wednesday's victory. Yakutat won 43-37 on Tuesday. Stephanie Johnson, Samantha Johnson and Lindsey Hershey added six points each for Yakutat, which improves to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in region play.

Natalie Wangerin and Molly Sharp both scored nine points to lead Klawock, which fell to 8-5 overall and 6-4 in region. Jessica Peters added eight points, while Stlaay Morrison and Rachel Smith scored four each and Yodean Armour added two for the Chieftains.

Klawock trailed 31-19 entering the final quarter, but their late comeback fell short. Sharp scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter after battling foul trouble earlier in the game.

Yakutat boys beat Klawock

The Yakutat Eagles rallied from four points down in the final quarter to claim a 44-39 victory over the Klawock Chieftains on Wednesday afternoon. Yakutat's victory came one day after Klawock won 51-41 and helped the Eagles earn a split of their two-game Region VClass 2A boys basketball series in Klawock.

Wayne Gray and Martin Sensmeier both scored 10 points to lead Yakutat, which improved to 6-8 overall and 5-3 in region action. Derek James added nine points for Yakutat, while Robin Brantley had six, Skye Endicott and Anthony Schmidt scored three each, and Jake Endicott added two points for the Eagles.

Shawn Kato-Yates and Nic Heppe each scored 10 points to lead Klawock, which fell to 5-8 overall and 3-7 in region play. Ryan Wangerin chipped in six points, Darren Clark had five, and the duo of Bryan Wangerin and Lawrence Armour scored four points apiece for the Chieftains, who led 35-31 entering the fourth quarter.
