Feb. 23-March 7

• Soccer referee course — USSF referee certification for new referees with

soccer knowledge, and recertification for referee’s certified in 2007 or

2008 will be offered in six sessions at the Mendenhall Library beginning

Feb. 23 from 6-9 p.m. Additional sessions: Feb. 25, 26, 28, Mar. 4 and 7.

Feb. 24 & 26

• Learn to fly fish — Learn fly casting, how to tie a very effective fly for

Juneau, and where and when to fish roadside waters. Flyfishers 101 will be

held both evenings in Floyd Dryden Middle School’s library and gym. Free

evaluation of equipment by instructor Tony Soltys. Call Community Schools at

780-2074 to register. The cost of classes is $21.

Feb. 26-March 1

• Cabin Fever Doubles Tournament — JRC The Alaska Club will host the Cabin

Fever Doubles Tournament, from Thursday, Feb. 26, until March 1, for mixed,

men’s and women’s doubles divisions. Registration closes Monday. For one

event, the cost is $20 plus tax for members or $30 for nonmembers. For two

events, the cost is $30 plus tax for members and $40 for nonmembers. For

Feb. 27-March 6

• Old Timer hockey — Treadwell Arena hosts the Old Timer Hockey Tournament

with teams from Juneau, Anchorage, Dawson City, Whitehorse and Watson Lake.

Competitors are aged 35 and up.

March 7-10

• Annual all-day ski workshop for women — Eaglecrest Ski Area’s “Yes You

Can!” ski workshop for women of all abilities includes five hours of

coaching on the hill, continental breakfast, lunch, guest presentations,

March 8

• Annual all-day ski clinic for adults — Eaglecrest Ski Area’s “Get Out of

Yur Rut!” ski clinic is for adults who ski green slopes to black to progress

in their skiing ability. It includes five hours of coaching on the hill by

PSIA-certified instructors, continental breakfast, lunch, guest

• Region V Basketball in Ketchikan — Tickets for the Region V Basketball

Tournament held March 4-8 in Ketchikan are now on sale at the Juneau-Douglas

High School Activities Office. Reserved balcony guaranteed seating and

adult/student bleacher seating is available. Passes must be reserved by Feb.

• Juneau Cheer Club offers elite snow removal — As long as there is snow,

the Juneau Cheer Club will offer elite snow removal anywhere in Juneau from

8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. These hard-working

young athletes are trying to raise money for uniforms and competition

• Classic Women’s Soccer — Friday nights 6-7:30 pm beginning January 9th. 14

games. Cost $49. Bring a light and dark shirt. Coed Masters Soccer will be

7:30-9 p.m. Fridays beginning Jan. 9. There will be 14 games. Cost is $49.

Male players must be over 30 years of age. Bring a light and dark shirt.

Open soccer is 9-10 p.m. Tuesday nights, which began Jan. 6. Cost is $4. New

this winter is Competitive Coed Soccer, held 6-8 p.m. Saturday nights,

beginning Jan. 10. There will be eight games, and games may be added if

enough players register to cover costs. Cost $35. This will be run in the

same format as Coed Masters. It will be played in a pick-up format. Bring a

• Youth referees needed — Juneau Parks and Recreation is looking for

referees for the upcoming youth basketball season. If you have any knowledge

of the game of basketball, or have any experience playing or reffing, we

would love to have your help. You will get paid for each game you referee.

The season runs from January 17-March 14. For more information, please

• Adult soccer — Men’s and women’s competitive indoor soccer league at the

Dimond Park Fieldhouse have room for four men’s teams and four women’s

teams. Form your team now. Games, held Sunday nights, start March 22 and run

through May. Registration due March 9. Cost is $35. Open adult soccer is

Tuesday nights, 9-10 p.m. Cost is $4. Classic Women and Coed Masters also

are ongoing, Friday nights until April 24. Cost is $49. Information and

• Court rentals — Community Schools has court rentals available from 9 a.m.

to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School. Cost is $30 per

• Juneau Skating Club — The Juneau Skating Club’s third session of the year

began Jan. 16. Classes meet one time per week for six weeks. Group lessons

meet either Friday nights, 6:30-7:30 p.m., or Saturday mornings, 11:45

a.m.-12:45 p.m. Hockey skills classes started Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m.

The club also started its second session of Learn to Ice Skate on Nov. 7.

• Mount Jumbo Gym pre-school open gym — Children must be accompanied and

supervised by an adult, at a maximum ratio of four children to one adult.

Play equipment and tumbling mats available. This program is open to parents

or caregivers of youth age 1-6, Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Bring clean

• Ultimate Frisbee Players of Southeast Alaska — The Ultimate Frisbee

Players of Southeast Alaska will hold league play will take place 7-9 p.m.

• Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School court rentals — Community Schools has court

rental times available, starting at 9 a.m., on Saturdays at Dzantik’i Heeni

Middle School. Cost is $20 per hour, per court, which must be paid at the

• Basketball and volleyball open gyms — Community Schools is sponsoring open

gyms a Thunder Mountain High School for basketball and volleyball Sundays,

Mondays and Wednesdays through October. Time is 6:30-8:30 p.m. and cost is

$3 per person, per session. Participants are asked to bring their own

• Evening masters swimming program — The Augustus Brown pool hosts a

twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from

6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and

improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19 and older.

Participants must be able to swim crawl stroke and backstroke. Info:

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes —

For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the

Juneau Parks and Rec Hikes Hotline. Bring plenty of food and water, and wear

warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or

firearms allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or

older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied

• Mount Jumbo Gym rentals — Parks and Recreation is accepting reservations

for rentals of the Mount Jumbo Gym. The gym is open for rental from until

Dec. 30. Rentals can be made noon-1 p.m. and 6-10 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 10

a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays and noon-10 p.m. Sundays. Cost is $30 per hour. Terry

Miller gym also is available for rent. Info: 586-5226.

• Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall — Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m.

on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The

climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger

climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult

interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee.

information on upcoming sports and outdoors events in Juneau. It runs when

space is available and event notices should arrive at least one week before
