JUNEAU - Police are investigating two men they believe were "tagging" downtown businesses early Thursday morning with black paint and a stencil of a man.
A Juneau Police Department officer approached two men around 5:45 a.m. Thursday who were behaving suspiciously, according to a press release. The officer located a handmade stencil of a man that had black paint on it. There were also several items of evidence collected that associated the men with the crime.
At least three downtown businesses were vandalized in the 200 block area of South Franklin Street, according to police. Alcohol was involved.
The men were not arrested because Alaska law does not allow police officers to arrest for most misdemeanors on probable cause, including criminal mischief. The cases must be filed with the prosecuting agency and the prosecutors decide in there is enough evidence to pursue the case.
Police are continuing the investigation and will file charges with prosecutors, according to the press release.
Anyone with property vandalized with a figure of a man painted on it is encouraged to call JPD at 586-0600.
