Student artist in the spotlight

Dugan Paddock

Posted: Friday, February 27, 2009

Age: 12

Grade: 7

School: Floyd Dryden

Teacher: Julia Bastuscheck, orchestra teacher

Reason: I first chose this instrument because i wanted to learn how to play bass guitar so I chose to play double bass. Later I fell in love with the low notes and being able to hold together whole orchestra - it is very empowering.

Experience: I have been playing bass for 12 years.

Family: My family is split between reading, video games, and I guess I'm the only one who has an interest in playing music. Everyone else just likes listening to music.

Favorite artists: My favorite genre of music is hard rock amd heavy metal, some of my favorite bands are Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Amon Amart, and Korn.

Future plans: I hope to be in a metal band and am currently in a small band with some of my friends.

Other interests: None really. I like to play sports but I fractured my heel playing football so I couldn't finish the season or wrestle.

Hero: My hero used to play in my favorite band, Metallica, but died in Europe while on tour. His name is Cliff Burton.

What his teacher, Julia Bastuscheck, says about him: Dugan loves music and has a lot of talent and natural ability. He is learning a lot about music by playing the string bass in orchestra. He takes what he learns in class and applies it to the rock music he plays outside of the classroom.

Dugan is 100 percent positive and an excellent role model for all the students in orchestra. He is serious about music, but at the same time he realizes that getting his basics down will allow him to have more fun playing

I think Dugan is a great kid with loads of potential. I feel very lucky to have him as a student.
