Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2011

Ron and Kathy Maas have dedicated scholarship funds for four music students to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp each summer. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote interest in big band music and big band performance.

Applicants must be attending a Juneau school music program in middle or high school. Applicants should have an interest in big band jazz and in the future of big band performance.

To apply, write a letter to the below address including the following information: the instrument you play, musical groups you have played in and any meaningful experiences you have had. Describe why you have an interest in big band music and performance and what you hope to gain from attending music camp. If you are chosen to attend the camp, you must enroll in both concert band and jazz band.

The four winners will be chosen by Ron and Kathy Maas together with two local music teachers. Application letters must be received no later than March 20 and will be followed by a short interview with the judges. Winners will be announced on April 1.

This scholarship includes tuition and room and board but not transportation. The scholarship will be paid directly to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

For more information, talk to your music teacher or call 586-1362. Applications may be sent to Ron Maas, 311 Gruening Ave., Juneau, AK 99801.
