Things have changed for women - but not enough and not fast enough, according to University of Alaska Southeast Professor Sue Koester.
That's one of the reasons why Koester organized a panel as part of a series of Women's History Month events scheduled for March.
In her Gendered Interpersonal Communications class Koester assigns students to choose a form of media - such as ``Good Morning America,'' Broadway musicals or Playboy magazine - and analyze them to see what roles women play. Students ask questions: Have the roles of women changed in this media over time? How do the images influence the way you are and the way you want to become?
Eight of the 24 students in the class will appear on a panel March 22 - one of many events celebrating women and their history listed in a calendar issued by the Juneau Women's Council.
``I try to find ways that my students can take the work they do for the classroom to a more public forum,'' Koester said.
Alexis Easley is another UAS professor participating in Women's History Month. Her presentation Wednesday spins off her British Women Writers class.
``Women were traditionally excluded from what we call the `literary canon.' We explore ways we can rediscover them and bring them into the academy as subjects for learning,'' Easley said.
