Juneau Parks and Rec youth activity grants - The Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation is accepting proposals from public and private non-profit organizations that deliver youth activity programs. Youth Activity Grant applications are available at the JPR office in City Hall and the application deadline is at 4:30 p.m on Tuesday, March 1. Gastineau Channel Little League 2005 season tryouts - GCLL has scheduled baseball and softball tryouts for the 2005 season. Baseball tryouts will be held on Saturday, March 5, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School; Sunday, March 6, at Floyd Dryden Middle School; and Monday, March 7, at Dzantik'i Heeni. Softball tryouts will be held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, March 12-14, at Riverbend Elementary School. Evening Masters Swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly Evening Masters Swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.
Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. ADF&G Indoor Shooting Range closure - Due to a turnover of staff at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's indoor shooting range, the range has suspended normal public shooting hours. The department's Division of Wildlife Conservation is working to fill staff vacancies and hopes to reopen the range to public shooting in a few weeks. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
