Bears nab No. 1 seed in SE tourney

Posted: Monday, February 28, 2011

The Juneau-Douglas and Ketchikan boys’ basketball teams finished their regular seasons Saturday night with a 44-42 Kings win over the Crimson Bears in Ketchikan on senior night, but the rival squads had to wait until Sunday to see who would be the No. 1 seed come Southeast Conference Tournament time.

After different tie-breaking scenarios were not enough to determine the No. 1 seed, the tie was broken on Sunday as the Bears won a blind draw, giving them the top seed in the conference tournament and a first-round bye. Ketchikan, the No. 2 seed, will match up against the No. 3 seed Thunder Mountain Falcons at 6:25 p.m. on Tuesday at Juneau-Douglas High School.

The Crimson Bears and Kings finished the regular season with matching 6-2 records in region play, and the teams were still tied after head-to-head, point-differential and common-opponent tiebreakers.

The Region V 4A tournament begins at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday with a girls’ basketball matchup between Ketchikan and Thunder Mountain at Juneau-Douglas.
