St. George awaits shipment of fuel oil

Posted: Friday, February 29, 2008

ANCHORAGE - Officials with the state Division of Emergency Management say they are monitoring a fuel shortage in the Pribilof Island community of St. George.

State officials say there do not appear to be any immediate life or safety issues as the islanders await a shipment of oil.

A scheduled barge shipment of fuel did not arrive and Mayor Alvin Merculief said the situation is critical. He said the community power plant has only about 48 hours worth of fuel to generate power.

The city is conserving what it has and villagers hope a barge can arrive by the weekend.
