FAIRBANKS - A 30-year-old Fairbanks man was sentenced to two years in prison for shooting a friend in the neck last year.
Christopher Aaron Fette apologized Wednesday in court for shooting Nathan Hurley, who survived.
Fette said he had stopped taking medication for his mental illness and drank alcohol before the shooting.
Fette's public defender, Bill Spiers, told Superior Court Judge Douglas Blankenship that Fette is an unusually bright young man with a desire to do well in the community.
Spiers says Fette had reached out for help with his mental illness rather than hiding it.
Fette was initially charged with attempted murder but prosecutors reduced the charge to assault in a plea deal.
