Juneau Billiard Association - Capital City Classic: Juneau's premiere pool tournament takes place March 6-9 at the Viking Lounge. This year's Capital City Classic features 9-ball preliminaries on Thursday, March 6; 8-ball preliminaries on Friday, March 7; Scotch doubles preliminaries on Saturday, March 8; and all finals on Sunday, March 9. For those players who don't win an entry through a mini-tournament, each division costs $50 to enter. Gastineau Channel Little League online registration - Online registration will be open at the Gastineau Channel Little League's Web site, http://www.juneau.com/littleleague/. The secure Web site went live this month and parents can now use it to pay for their children's registration by credit card. Regular registration will take place at the Nugget Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday during the weekend of March 1-2. Raincountry Flyfishers Annual Fly-Tying Workshop - The eighth annual workshop takes place from 7-9 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, March 3, 5, 10 and 12, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School library. Learn to tie and fish the seven most-productive flies for Juneau waters. Materials will be provided and a few fly-tying kits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sports card trading show - Meet from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, at Collector's Hideaway (near Alaskan and Proud Foodland on Willoughby Street). Local collectors will be showcasing their favorite sports cards for trading, selling and viewing. NBA rookie and college cards of former Juneau-Douglas High School basketball player Carlos Boozer will be available, including some signed cards and some with swatches of his jerseys. Eaglecrest Ski School nordic ski workshop - Former U.S. Olympic Ski Team member Adam Verrier of Anchorage will be in town March 7-9 to give a nordic ski workshop at Eaglecrest Ski Area. The tentative schedule for Friday includes an advanced skating or freestyle class from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by an advanced diagonal or classic session from 1:30-4:30 p.m., both with an emphasis on racing. On Saturday, the schedule calls for a beginning skating class from 9-10:45 a.m., a beginning classic class from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and an intermediate/advanced classic session from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday's schedule features a beginning classic class from 9-10:45 a.m., a beginning skating class from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and an intermediate/advanced skating class from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sessions are possible on Monday if there's enough interest. Each class will be limited to 10 students, with a fee of $25 for the morning classes on Saturday and Sunday and $35 for the Saturday and Sunday afternoon classes and the Friday classes. Registration opens to the general public on Saturday, March 1, and payment is required to hold a spot in a class. Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Southeast Alaska's Bowl for Kids' Sake - This 23rd annual fund-raising event takes place on Saturday, March 15, at Channel Bowl (registration closed on Feb. 15). Juneau, Alaska, Ice Hockey Tournament - The inaugural hockey tournament at the new Treadwell Ice Arena takes place on March 14-16. The tournament is for players age 32-older, although some exceptions for younger players will be considered if a waiver application is filed before the tournament. The tournament is expected to field four A level teams and six B level teams, with visiting teams from Whitehorse and Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, Atlin, British Columbia, Anchorage and several combined-town teams. Julie Hughes Triathlon volunteers - Volunteers are needed for the 19th annual Julie Hughes Triathlon in Sitka. The triathlon takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, and all registration takes place from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10. Adult athletes will cover a course with a 1,000-meter swim, a 12-mile bike and a five-mile run. Gastineau Channel Little League open gyms - Gym time for GCLL players is scheduled each Sunday through April from 1-4 p.m. at Auke Bay School. 4-H Nordic Ski Club - The fifth year of this club for youth and adult skiers will meet every Sunday afternoon through March 16 at various locations TBA with club leaders Odin Brudie and Frankie Pillifant ($6 membership fee). The club has a limited number of pairs of classic and skating ski sets for rent for $20 for the entire winter season. Club leaders will help parents size skis for their children. The club only rents youth skis, adults must provide their own. If families couldn't attend the Dec. 14 registration meeting, they should call the 4-H office and enroll by phone.
