Juneau Billiard Association - Capital City Classic pool tournament: Sign up now for the 2004 tournament, the JBA's largest pool tournament of the year in Juneau. The tournament takes place March 4-7 at the Viking Lounge. Events include 9-Ball on Thursday, 8-Ball on Friday and Scotch Doubles on Saturday, with the finals of all three events taking place on Sunday. Each event costs $50 per player and registration takes place about 9-10 a.m. on the day of each event. So far there have been about 30l out-of-town pool players call in early registrations. Roughhouse Friday boxing - The scheduled main event is Matt "The Goat" Coppick of Sitka vs. Neil "Razor" Rodriguez of Anchorage, with a card of at least eight more bouts. Juneau Skating Club power and conditioning class - This four-week class for recreational, figure and hockey skaters takes place at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings starting on March 9 at Treadwell Arena. This class is designed to not only improve the skating skills of skaters at varying levels, but also to help develop conditioning and provide a good cardiovascular workout. Buckwheat Ski Classic - Registration forms are available in Juneau at Foggy Mountain Shop for this annual event that takes place in Skagway on Saturday, March 27. Events include 10-kilometer, 25K and 50K ski races, a 5K kids' race and a 5K snowshoe sprint. The registration deadline is Monday, March 15. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau 4-H Cross-Country Ski Club - Regular ski sessions will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays through March 7, 2004, at various locations around Juneau. The club is run by Odin Brudie and Frankie Pillifant and is open for students in grades K-12, but parents are encouraged to ski with their children. Ski equipment is available for rent, but people renting equipment must participate in most of the club's events. A 4-H membership fee of $6 (good all year for all 4-H clubs) will be charged, and ski equipment can be rented for the season for $50 (with $20 refunded if you participate in seven 4-H ski days, scholarships available based on need). Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
