Book battlers compete at state

The Auke Bay Elementary School's third-grade team of Chris Herrick, Kathe Tallmadge, and Ali Eason and the school's fifth-grade team of Tom Parker, Kaila Buerger, and Anna Gregovich won the Juneau School District's competition on Feb. 5. They went onto compete in the statewide competition (via audio conference) in day-long battles on Feb. 17-18. Juneau placed sixth in the third/fourth and fifth/sixth levels.

Juneau's seventh/eighth grade winners also placed sixth in the state. They were the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School team of Sam Bornstein, Leah Francis, Iris Neary, and Andrew Dimond.

Battle of the Books is an reading motivational and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. Books are chosen for grades three and four, five and six, seven and eight, and high school.
