... to the volunteers
Auke Bay Elementary School would like to announce the winners of the 2005 Auke Bay Spelling Bee: first place Spencer Lunda, second place Rosie Jones, and third place Zach White. It is the second year in a row that Spencer Lunda has won the school spelling bee. Congratulations!
We would also like to thank our volunteers for putting the event on. George Reifenstein was the pronouncer, and three wonderful retired Auke Bay School teachers were the judges, Myrna Elgee, SaraJean Fujioka, and Pam Walling. Mrs. Betty Nelson, Mr. K, and Phil the janitor were instrumental in making the program run smoothly.
Sponsors for the spelling bee include Alaska Pacific Bank, Hearthside Books, Freakin' Pizza, Hong Kong Cafe, Udder Culture, and Pappa Murphy's Pizza. Generous donations from these local businesses added excitement to the event and rewarded all of the students for their outstanding academic achievements. Support from these sponsors is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

... to DHSS
I came from the Midwest last February to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. VISTA volunteers spend one year working in a community program on poverty alleviation. In my case, I volunteered at the state Department of Health and Social Services's Division of Juvenile Justice. Our project seeks to reduce the disproportionate rate of contact minority youth have with the juvenile justice system. I want to thank the many people from Juneau who were so helpful over my year: juvenile probation officer Barbara Learmonth; program coordinator Tony Newman; associate coordinator Terry Gonwa, who was a wonderful role model; research analyst Sean McKenzie; analyst programmer Conrad Muller; Patty Ware; and many others. My VISTA year was a positive experience because of you.
