What will the access road do for Southeast Alaska? It will give transportation that all Alaskans and tourists who use this road system can afford. Alternative 2B will handle the traffic demand and create a potential for further economic development.
Our ferry system has become so expensive, with fuel costs skyrocketing and high maintenance and labor costs, it is almost prohibitive to use. I was charged more than $1,600 to bring my pickup and wife from Bellingham to Hoonah for a one-way ticket. That put a terrible crunch on my pocketbook.
I've only lived here in Alaska for 31 years. I can see that the road access will be a great improvement over our present system. The shuttle ferry will do a great job moving traffic and save the state lots of money in the long run.
According to all the negative reports we read about, everyone (not just a select few) will get to see all the treasures and wonders of the beautiful Berners Bay sanctuary, which we have heard about over and over and over again.
We have waited long enough for public access from Juneau to Haines and Skagway. Let's build the road now.
