Ayers strong as BC falls to No. 1 Vandy in baseball

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Juneau-Douglas High School graduate Joe Ayers nearly helped Boston College upset the nation's top-ranked college baseball team, Vanderbilt, on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

The Commodores upended the Eagles 7-6 as Ryan Flaherty hit a walk-off, two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning.

Ayers, a senior, put Boston College ahead 2-1 in the second inning with an RBI single.

In the ninth, Ayers led off the inning with a double and scored the go-ahead run off Ryan Hutchinson's single. Hutchinson's RBI put Boston College ahead 6-5.
