JUNEAU - Juneau music teacher and librarian Lorrie Heagy is one of ten musicians nationwide to hold an Abreu Fellowship at the New England Conservatory in Boston. The program provides tuition-free instruction and a living stipend for postgraduate musicians.

The fellowship is part of the new El Sistema USA program, inspired by the renowned El Sistema program in Venezuela that has helped transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of students in poverty through orchestral music.

During the year-long program, Heagy will study in Boston and Caracas, and will return to develop and teach the El Sistema model in Juneau. Graduates are expected to contribute to an El Sistema-inspired program for a period of at least one year.

Heagy is now blogging at http://juneaumusicmatters.blogspot.com/.
