HANALEI, Hawaii - Officials on Kauai reported a 70-year-old man visiting from Juneau, died of an apparent drowning.

They said Monday that Frank Palmer was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday after being pulled from the water at Hanalei Beach.

Fire officials said Palmer was wading about 20 feet from shore when a possible medical condition caused him to fall into the water.

The man's grandson tried to help, but by the time he reached his grandfather the older man was face down in the water.

Lifeguards brought Palmer to shore and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Fire fighters took over CPR, and then turned the scene over to arriving medics, who pronounced him dead.
