Tolerance begins at home - with parents

Posted: Wednesday, March 03, 2004

I just read the letter about the racial tauntings. As a mother of a middle school student, I am responding.

Racial tauntings are not the only issue in school. My son has Asperger syndrome. He is teased constantly and harassed. Not only is this wrong, hurtful, and mean, it is against the law. Maybe we should be talking to the parents of these students. As parents we are responsible for our children.

School and high school are supposed to get you ready for life and the "real world." A time you are supposed to enjoy and have fond memories of, not something you have to do and hate every day. After all, doesn't learning begin at home?
