There's snow on the mountain, but "Under the Sea" will be the theme this weekend at Eaglecrest Ski Area as the University of Alaska Southeast sponsors its own version of the Winter X Games.
The two-day Games will be a mix of traditional and not-so-traditional winter sports competitions. Saturday events include:
10 a.m. - Alpine slalom style race.
1 p.m. - Xtreme Team Relay, with four-person coed teams of one alpine skier, one snowboarder, one telemark skier and one team choice. There will be bonus points for "Under the Sea" costumes, and a BBQ at the lodge.
3 p.m. - Downhill Dummy Competition, where teams of up to four people can enter a dummy that weighs less than 100 pounds, is on skis or a snowboard, and can be carried to the starting line on the Platter slope. There will be judging for best use of theme, distance and best crash.
Sunday Winter X Games events include:
10 a.m. - Nordic ski race - skate or classic - on the Lower Meadow Loop.
Noon - Slopestyle competition for skiers and snowboarders at the terrain park.
1:30 p.m. - Snow art judging - painting and sculpture.
2 p.m. - Extreme tubing - candy and other prizes on the hill, with costume competition for best use of theme.
2-5 p.m. - Live music with the band 4 Brave Monkeys.
3:30 p.m. - Awards ceremony.
The entry fee for each event is $5, and there are three age categories - Youth (age 17-under), Senior (age 18-30) and Master (age 30-over).
Registration will take place at the lodge from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, and from 8 a.m.-noon on Sunday. Competitors should register at least one half-hour before their event.
