Dzantik'i Heeni wins crown at Southeast wrestling meet

Wrestlers from 11 Southeast middle schools participate

Willey Strehler and Bryce Saviers finished first in their weight classes last weekend to lead the host Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School wrestling team to the team crown at the 2005 Southeast Middle School Wrestling Championships.

Wrestlers from 11 schools around Southeast Alaska gathered at Dzantik'i Heeni on Friday and Saturday for the meet. Dzantik'i Heeni won the team title with 234 points, followed by Petersburg with 212, Wrangell with 200 and Floyd Dryden Middle School with 180.5.

Strehler won the title in the 95-pound bracket, while Saviers finished first at 115 pounds for Dzantik'i Heeni, which also benefited from second-place finishes by seven wrestlers - Cort Saviers (75 pounds), Flynn Lobaugh (85), Jacob Calvin (90), Cory Mahar (127), Mike Chilton (140), Joe Slagle (148) and Nick Paulick (heavyweight).

Floyd Dryden did not have any title-winners, but three of its wrestlers finished second in their divisions - Lester Hunt (105), Kurt Barry (133) and Todd Wehnes (160).

One highlight of Saturday's finals was the matchup at 110 pounds, where Petersburg's Max Peeler defeated his twin brother, Zach, on a 5-0 decision.
