UAS Winter Games - The University of Alaska Southeast will hold its day long winter games at Eaglecrest Ski Area starting at 8:30 a.m. with a nordic race. Learn to ice skate - The Juneau Skating Club will be holding group skating lessons for all levels and ages starting this weekend. Buckwheat Ski Classic registration - The 20th annual Buckwheat Ski Classic is scheduled for March 25 at Log Cabin, British Columbia, Canada. There will be 50K, 25K and 10K cross-country ski races as well as a 5K kids race and a 5K snowshoe race. There will be pre- and post-race events in Skagway with an awards banquet and dance at Eagles Hall. The race is a fund raiser for the Skagway Ski Club and traditionally hosts more than 200 participants from Alaska, Yukon Territories and elsewhere. Juneau Parks and Recreation youth basketball players and coaches needed - The Juneau Parks and Recreation department is looking for players to compete in the 10-11 year old boys division and 12-18 girls division. Coed Classic Soccer League - The Coed Classic Soccer League is designed for soccer players ages 30 and older who wish to continue their glory days of playing in an exclusively non-competitive but fun and enjoyable environment. Tornados Youth Wrestling Club registration - The Tornados Youth Wrestling Club Session II begins Feb. 13. Registration for the club will run through March 13. Tornados Wrestling Session II is for boys and girls ages 12-18 who are interested in learning wrestling skills. New wrestlers will learn basic skills while veteran wrestlers will build on basic skills and prepare for competition. Community Schools Open Adult Gym time - There will be open adult gym at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School for soccer on Fridays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. For basketball and volleyball, there will be open gym time on Sundays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is a $5 fee and players should bring their own soccer balls, basketballs or volleyballs. Yukon River Quest - registration - Registration has begun for the 2006 Yukon River Quest canoe and kayak race. The 460-mile race spans the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City in Yukon Territory, Canada. Deadline for entry is May 26. There is a limit of 70 canoe and kayak teams and only 25 solo kayak teams. Entry fees are $700 (Canadian) for tandem canoes and kayaks, $400 for solo kayaks and $200 for voyager teams. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver takes place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays through April 28. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee or punchcards for $10 or $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th St. in Douglas. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
