Doug Chilton checks the warmth of a 26-foot carved spruce canoe on Sunday near the North Douglas Boat Ramp. Chilton's brother, Brian, partially hidden at left, cuts up wooden pallets, and Doug Chilton Jr., right, feeds a fire to heat the rocks used to steam the canoe. The steam allows the hull to sag, rounding out the shape of the canoe, which was commissioned for the new Ocean Hall at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The hall will open in September.
