JUNEAU - Police arrested a Juneau woman Saturday night after she allegedly left a downtown bar and drove drunk, causing two accidents on Egan Drive and nearly running a mother and her two children off the road.
Tara Stuart, 26, was arrested and charged with drunken driving, two counts of third-degree assault and three counts of reckless endangerment after a 2006 Chevrolet truck she was driving was stopped by police at Vanderbilt Hill Road. In her wake, police said, Stuart left a trail of crashed vehicles and two injured people between the downtown area and the Vanderbilt intersection.
Police received numerous reports of an apparent drunken driver at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday, as a red truck driving north on Egan Drive almost ran a vehicle off the road, climbed up a snow bank and crashed into a retaining wall, nearly overturning. The red truck crashed into a car, then continued north on the highway, witnesses reportedly told police.
A 35-year-old local woman, with her two children riding inside, was driving the narrowly missed vehicle.
Police said the same truck then struck another car traveling outbound on Egan Drive at Twin Lakes. The 43-year-old driver and a passenger of that car were injured, and the car was damaged and disabled in the roadway.
Police did not say how Stuart was stopped at the Vanderbilt intersection.
Stuart's Chevrolet truck had extensive damage to the front end and was totaled, police said. She was arrested at the scene and later charged with refusal to submit to a chemical test and the felony offense of leaving the scene of an accident.
