ANCHORAGE - Organizers of the Serum Run sled dog race are ending the contest early.
Citing poor trail conditions, organizers on Monday said everyone has been pulled off the 800-mile race from Nenana to Nome, a race commemorating the 1925 relay of lifesaving diphtheria serum to Nome.
Temperatures were 40 below on Monday morning.
Snowmachiners are expected back in Nenana, the race's start location, today, and mushers will be flown to Anchorage.
Anchorage television station KTUU also reports a 33-year-old snowmachiner was located Monday afternoon after he was reported overdue. The Ruby man was not part of the Serum Run, but was traveling along much of the same route.
Authorities said he was found taking shelter in a cabin between Tanana and Ruby.
