John Stone named Engineer of the Year

JUNEAU - John Stone was honored as the Alaska Capital Engineers' 2010 Engineer of the Year. The award was presented to Stone during the 2010 Engineers Banquet and Awards Ceremony held Feb. 20 at Centennial Hall.

The Alaska Capital Engineers is made up of members of the Juneau Branches of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Alaska Society of Professional Engineers.

Stone has served as Juneau's port director since 2003. Stone serves under the direction of the Juneau Docks and Harbors Board and oversees all the operation of two cruise ship facilities, seven small boat harbor facilities, six recreational boat launch facilities and several hundred acres of the tidelands. Prior to serving as port director, Stone was the engineering director for the city, where he oversaw the city's capital improvement project program.

Stone holds a degree in forest engineering from the University of Maine and has been a registered civil engineer in Alaska since 1990. He is a past president of the Alaska Association of Harbormasters and Port Administrators and is an avid sailor and cruiser. During the winter, Stone referees youth and adult hockey, and he has been president of the Juneau Hockey Officials Association since its inception in 2003.
