Alaska Senate turns to citizens for savings ideas

JUNEAU — The Alaska Senate State Affairs Committee is seeking suggestions for how to reign in state spending.

Committee Chair Sen. Bill Wielechowski says government employees and members of the public are invited to submit ideas to a new website called $ave Alaska.

Wielechowski says Alaska has a large amount of money saved but state government needs to become more efficient and must reduce expenditures.

The idea came to Wielechowski while campaigning door to door, where he says he often met government employees who offered recommendations for decreasing the budget.

Wielechowski says the committee will possibly incorporate suggestions into bills and other proposals before the start of the next legislative session.
