Last Wednesday night the Assembly Finance Committee met to deliberate issues concerning local tax revenues as recommended by Mayor Egan's Task Force on Fiscal Policy. While I spoke for nearly five minutes about the difficulty of considering the senior sales tax exemption, only one sentence was quoted to "characterize" my remarks. That one sentence was woefully out of context and, I believe, did not accurately convey the essence of my words.
Reading it made me feel sick inside because I knew how it would read to those who were not at the meeting. Seniors are a vital part of the fabric of our community, and I would never propose to belittle them or their contributions to our quality of life. From the bottom of my heart I apologize for the disappointment you have felt over what you believe I have done. I can only hope that, in the future, all of my sentences can stand alone.
As for the issue itself, no one has proposed removing the current exemption from those who are receiving it, and before any action is taken there will be a public hearing.
Again, please let me offer my apologies. It is my mission to bring us closer, not divide us further.
