Changes in the works: Word of Mouth gives readers a forum to express opinions on a variety of issues by telephone. Calls must be limited to one minute. We reserve the right to edit calls for clarity, length and libel. Callers must leave their name and a number at which they can be contacted (usually between 8 a.m. and noon). Only comments accompanied by a name will be published and only after the caller's identity is verified. Callers' names will appear in print. Call 586-4636 and press 8255 to leave a message. - Editor
I want to thank the publisher of the Juneau Empire for his thoughtful column (Elevating the conversation) in Sunday's newspaper. His decision to make changes to Word of Mouth, while upholding the original intent of the column, should be applauded throughout our community. The change will be refreshing and will restore some respectability and legitimacy to our hometown newspaper, while still affording those who wish not to write a letter, the opportunity to comment on issues. Those callers will simply now be accountable for their comments. In this case, change is good - thank you!
Good call on Word of Mouth. We have kept the line open for those who would rather call than write. The difference is now we are all equally responsible for what we say. Thank you.
Bravo on your decision to have people identify themselves in Word of Mouth. This is my first phone call to Word of Mouth, now that I know we have some accountability with our names and our phone numbers for clarification. Thank you very much and we look forward to reading Word of Mouth now with accountability.
We applaud your revised policy for Word of Mouth.
I found a sum of money on the streets of downtown Juneau Friday. Call me at 364-2874 and tell me the denomination of bill or bills and where it was lost and I'll give it back to you.
Excellent move. You have upgraded the Word of Mouth above writing on the bathroom wall.
Hi, after seeing how your paper tore into Dwight Perkins, a man who has a family and has lived in this community for years, I think Word of Mouth should remain the way it is. At least people can then have their say on the other side of manners. Juneau is a special place. Let's keep it that way and also keep Word of Mouth as it was started. It is fun to try and guess who called with what.
Thank you so much for changing the Word of Mouth policy so callers have to submit their names and phone numbers. If there is information the public needs to know about one should have the courage to sign their name. It also provides us an avenue to get more information or clear up misunderstandings.
You are right, there should be a face or a name with the words that are spoken on the Word of Mouth. However ... Word of Mouth provided some people with the ability to be heard and to put the pressure on some of the people that have earned it over the years. I know many people who do not have the ability to sit down and put their thoughts on paper or if they do, may fear the repercussions! What finally brought you to this decision? Was it because of someone who put unnecessary pressure on the paper? I will still enjoy to read the Juneau Empire, but will miss the candid comments some people made, who wouldn't otherwise do so.
Thank you for your efforts to provide more accuracy to the Empire and Word of Mouth. It is really frustrating as a reader to have accusations and counter accusations without any basis in fact.
