City offers free emergency training

The city is offering a free emergency training course starting March 11.

The Community Emergency Response Team course is designed to train community members how to prepare for and respond to a disaster or other emergency in their neighborhood. It works on the premise that community members can help themselves and neighbors in an emergency until emergency services arrive, according to information from the city.

The 20-hour training course starts March 11 in Juneau and runs through March 29. It includes training in:

• Disaster preparedness such as disaster-proofing your home, neighborhood risks and emergency supplies.

• Basic disaster first aid and triage.

• Basic fire fighting.

• Light search and rescue to determine if a building is safe to enter and how to search it.

• Terrorism risks and response.

• Disaster psychology.

• Emergency communications and how to organize a neighborhood team.

The class starts at 6:30 p.m. March 11 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5100 Glacier Highway, across from Western Auto. People who have attended prior classes are welcome back for refresher training.

For more information, e-mail or call Nick Meacher at 209-4911 or Cheryl Easterwood at 586-0221. The program is offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Citizen Corps.
