Coast Guard Women hold charity dinner

The Coast Guard Women's Association will hold its 17th Annual Charity Dinner and Auction, "Mardi Gras in March," on Saturday, March 13, at the Baranof Hotel.

Attractions include great food, fun prizes and terrific items for auction including Alaska Airline tickets, helicopter excursions and original art. A silent auction, complimentary shrimp and no-host cocktails will kick off the event at 6 p.m.

Dinner, featuring Cajun cuisine, will follow at 7 p.m. The live auction will begin at 8 p.m. Admission to the live auction is free. Proceeds will benefit local nonprofit organizations. To purchase dinner tickets or for more information, call Deana at 463-2050 or 463-3434 or Danette at 789-8470.

Helping Hands to put on St. Paddy's Day dinner

Helping Hands is holding an early St. Patrick's Day dinner. from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Church of Christ, 8755 Trinity Drive. Everyone is welcome.

The dinner will feature corn beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, salad and dessert as well as spaghetti, salad and garlic bread. There will be an original wall hanging quilt on display, "Fruits and Vegetables,"donated by Rhoda Walker. There will also be door prizes for the kids.

Visitors group sponsors King Salmon Derby

The Pelican Visitors Association will sponsor the first Pelican King Salmon Derby. The derby will begin on May 28 and end on June 6. The rules for the derby can be found online at

The association is offering a $2,500 first prize for the biggest King Salmon. There will be numerous prizes for places second through at 20th place. The association is soliciting merchants for merchandise or cash to enhance the prize list.

Pelican has a reputation for welcoming visitors and showing them a good time. Fishermen planning a trip to Pelican for the derby can find housing through the Web site as well as boats to rent or charter boat operators.

Subsistence regulations to be discussed in Sitka

The Southeast Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Council will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday through Friday, March 17-19, at the Best Western Shee Atika in Sitka to make recommendations on proposed changes to federal subsistence hunting and trapping regulations for 2004-2005. The Federal Subsistence Board will review the Council's recommendations at the Board's meeting in May.
