Parts delivery delay Fairweather's return

KETCHIKAN - The state ferry Fairweather will not return to service as planned.

The Alaska Marine Highway System says a lack of parts is to blame.

The ferry was expected to resume service between Juneau, Sitka and Petersburg on May 1 after a complete engine overhaul.

But the system's general manager, Capt. John Falvey, says the German manufacturer doesn't have the necessary parts in stock.

The company is instead manufacturing the parts, and that has pushed the timetable back.

The Fairweather is now expected to return to service in early June.

Falvey says they are working on resolving scheduling problems for Southeast.
