Phil and Karen Greeney are having business growth thrust upon them.

The Greeneys, owners of the Mt. Juneau Inn Bed & Breakfast on Glacier Highway, are doubling the size of their operation two years ahead of schedule.

Phil Greeney said that the recent, abrupt departure of the next-door tenant - the ABC Center, a longtime child care business - has forced them into a $400,000 remodeling project on short notice. The adjacent property, which the Greeneys bought in 1994 along with the house for their B-and-B, has to produce some income to offset the overhead, he said.

Greeney was working on financing and building plans last week, with the hope of getting the addition in shape for guests by June 1.

``Deferred maintenance is the kindest euphemism'' for the state of the property, he said.

Currently, there are seven B-and-B style rooms at the Mt. Juneau Inn. With the expansion, there will be 16. In addition, the existing operation has two two-bedroom apartments.

Although he's scrambling now, Greeney said it's a good time to expand, and he expects to attract more retreats, receptions and other group events in the off-season, as a result of the project.
