Rash of riflings hits Mendenhall Valley

JUNEAU - At 6 a.m. Saturday, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a vehicle that had been rifled through on Granite Drive. Officers searched the area and located eight other vehicles that had been rifled through.

Later that day, three other vehicles were reported rifled through in the area. A total of 12 vehicles were rifled through in the area between Granite Drive and Thunder Mountain Road.

At about 8:15 a.m., officers located a 1993 Ford van in a ditch on Long Run Drive. The owners said the vehicle had been stolen from their residence on Thunder Mountain Road.

At about 8:45 a.m., police received a separate report of a 1993 Dodge van that was stolen from Granite Drive. Officers later located the vehicle on Aspen Avenue.

All vehicles were believed to be unlocked and the stolen vehicles had keys inside of them. Police Chief Greg Browning asked citizens to be diligent in locking their vehicles.
