I agree with Ron Glenn of Ketchikan's letter on March 3. This administration is sabotaging the ferry system, foolishly thinking that everyone will support the road and not see through the ruse. Murkowski must have attended the same school as Bush and received the same grades. To paraphrase a movie line: "Murkowski is as Bush does."
Sound off on the important issues of the week at juneaublogger.com/voxbox
Let's see, Alaska Marine Highway System management schedules two ferries in one day (in Haines), at least twice a week, then complains that ridership for each is down. They say that to drive the road will cost the same as riding a ferry; so other than avalanches, etc., where is any advantage? Oh yeah, you could pay the same and add the exciting possibility of being stranded halfway by an avalanche for how long?
What about one ferry a day? It could be based in Haines or Skagway. Leave at 6 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. That would allow people to go to Juneau and conduct business, then return without the additional costs of lodging, etc. Ridership would increase significantly, and if the ride was reasonably priced, wow, they could see a profit after a year or so.
But, what do I know, I'm only a resident, not a relative or secret backer of the right people.
Remember what Forrest said. Can you spell "impeachment" on the state and federal level?
