JUNEAU - Her moves as governor have created headline news ranging in subject from calling out political corruption to posing for Vogue, but her pregnancy nearly shut down the Juneau Empire's Web site Thursday for several hours.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's announcement Wednesday that she is seven months pregnant drew more than 50,000 hits to the story on Thursday, and at one point, nearly 10,000 hits per hour for several hours as the server became overloaded with traffic and slowed page loads, according to the newspaper's webmaster.

The story, which appeared in Wednesday's edition, was posted at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday on, a popular news aggregate site that posts daily links in several categories to stories from around the world. The link drew more than 250 comments on that site by early Friday.

Palin reportedly said her pregnancy won't slow her down in the state's top political seat, but news of it sure had an impact elsewhere. The story drew the most Web traffic in the Empire's history, according to newspaper staff.
