It has been a year since I last saw Maggie Wigen. She worked with me in the Rainbow Foods kitchen last March for one day. If only I had known it would be the last time I would work with her. I would have let her choose the music. I would have let her plan the menu and only make the things she wanted to cook. I would have washed all her dishes, and done all her cleaning. She could have spent the day doing only her favorite tasks. Baking bread, cutting vegetables, preparing salad dressings, making pizza. No matter how much I want to, I can't go back to that day, and I can't bring Maggie back.
It seems like there has been a great silence surrounding Maggie's murder. Every now and then some rumor starts milling that an arrest is about to occur. Then more silence. Until recently there has been barely any mention of the murder in the news, and only the information that the investigation is ongoing. Something doesn't seem right.
I cannot be silent about Maggie's death. Allowing her killer to go free makes it seem like what happened was OK. Well it was not. I am grateful to the people of Tenakee for their effort to seek justice. They are circulating a petition around Juneau urging the completion of the investigation and the capture of Maggie's killer. The petition will be sent to the district attorney's office and the state attorney general. Find one and sign it. Please do not be silent.
