Mall experience bad for Juneau's image

Posted: Wednesday, March 10, 2010

It has come to my attention that there was a confrontation involving a security guard at the Nugget Mall and the Hoonah basketball team last weekend.

From what I understand, the guard felt that the entire team was loitering and asked them and their coaches to leave and not return for 30 days. When some of the parents and grandparents confronted the guard, they also were asked to leave for 30 days. Then other Hoonah citizens were asked to leave, apparently just on the basis that they were from Hoonah and had come to support the team.

I don't know if the Nugget Mall has been relocated to someplace in the Twilight Zone or perhaps the guard is a card-carrying member of Bizzaro World, but this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. It would be almost laughable if it weren't for the absurdity of the whole thing.

It would behoove the company that is providing security for the mall to re-examine their policies. In one fell swoop, one security guard has single-handedly offended an entire community and possibly caused irreparable damage to the merchants at the mall. I know I'm going to think twice before I go shopping there again.
