Tuesday outage traced to East Terminal

Posted: Thursday, March 10, 2011

The power went out in Juneau on Tuesday. Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. spokeswoman Gayle Wood said the outage occurred around 9:30 p.m. with service back up almost everywhere before 11 p.m.

Wood said the location of the outage was centered at the East Terminal, which is where the Snettisham line and Lake Dorothy Line transition from an overhead transmission line to a submarine cable that crosses Taku Inlet. She said a crew inspected the East Terminal equipment and Snettisham line Wednesday morning but didn’t find anything out of the ordinary.

“So the only thing we can say is whatever caused the fault on the system cleared itself by the time we were re-energizing,” Wood said.

AEL&P began re-energizing the system after the inspection, returning to hydro power shortly after noon. Juneau was on primarily diesel power with some hydro assistance during the outage.
