The Seventh Basic Arts Institute will be held in Juneau this year July 25 through August 6. The course helps K-12 educators experience how the arts can increase student performance, engagement and motivation through hands-on activities, discussions and field trips.
Leaders include Lorrie Heagy, Theresa John, Jan Abramovitz, and Shelley Toon Hight. They will share techniques to integrate a variety of arts into the classroom, including visual arts, storytelling, drama, music, movement and traditional cultural arts
Participants will work with fellow teachers from around Alaska, artists, and Tlingit and Yup'ik elders. Teachers will develop lessons and learn "10-minute miracles" to use immediately in their classroom.
The cost for teachers is $100 for four UAS credits (optional). Scholarships for teachers from AAEC member districts are available. The cost for teachers from non-member AAEC districts is $500 for course fees.
