Torch Run gratitude

Letters to the editor

Posted: Monday, March 12, 2001

On March 1 it was my privilege to bring 25 law enforcement officers from around the world to Juneau for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. These officers ran from the Juneau Airport to the Capitol where they were received by some of the legislators and a commendation was presented to them that had been passed by the House and the Senate.

I would like to thank several people who made this event possible and very successful: Sen. Lyda Green, who was the main Sponsor of the commendation and presented it to Alaska State Trooper Brandon Anderson of Seward; Speaker of the House Brian Porter, who acted as the master of ceremonies at the presentation; Commissioner Glenn Godfrey of Public Safety who took time out of his schedule to say a few words; Lt. Gary Folger, "A" Detachment Commander of Fish & Wildlife Protection and his staff for their participation in the actual run and preparation for it; and Hugh Dilbeck of Bear Body Works, who assisted in the preparation of the run.

A special thanks to Frank Rich of MGT Bus Company, who provided his bus and himself as driver and tour guide for the day, and Murray Damitio and Dean Damitio, owners of The Hangar on the Wharf, who hosted the entire team and support staff to an outstanding lunch.

It was a very pleasant experience for all of the officers who were there. I am certain it is not one that they will forget. As a former resident of Juneau I was pleased to see that the hospitality of Juneau is outstanding.

John D. Glass, Coordinator
