Title and firm: Hair stylist and sole proprietor of Stylin'.
Services: The salon offers haircuts for all ages, coloring and permanents. "It's a nice, quiet, personal salon. We have private areas for each chair," Smith said. Smith enjoys integrating whole families into his business.
Biographical information: Smith was born in Arizona and "moved around." He has lived in Alaska since 1986.
"I toured around Alaska until I found Juneau and liked it so much I decided to make it my home," he said.
"I trained in Jon Anthony's Academy of Hair Styling in Anchorage. Then I moved to Juneau in 1992," he said. He has worked as a hair stylist at Blades, First Impressions and Hair Jazz until he decided to go independent at the beginning of this year.
Smith specializes in color weaving, which is highlighting by using weave papers to separate narrow strands. "That gives a more natural color action when the hair moves and more natural tones to the hair," he said. Highlighting is one popular method of bringing youth and glamor to the hair of older women, he said.
Smith worked in downtown Juneau locations from 1992-97 and then moved to Lemon Creek, an area of Juneau which he considers "a nice midway point between it all."
Family: Smith's extended family lives in Valdez. His immediate family includes wife Emilee, who owns Highlander Grooming, which gives personal care to pets; and daughter Mandee, who just turned 2. The family's household pets include two dogs, three cats and five ferrets. Smith's hobbies include hiking, in-line skating and hunting, giving him an intimate understanding of "hat hair."
Getting youngsters comfortable with the routines of beauty salons is as easy as falling off a log, according to Smith. "If a parent is getting a haircut, bring the child in and let him or her get acquainted with the place before his own hair is done."
