Free cabs on St. Paddy's Day

Alaska Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailers Association is once again sponsoring the Safe Ride program for St. Patrick's Day in Juneau on Monday, March 17.

Alaska CHARR, along with its eight local affiliate organizations, will sponsor cab vouchers in communities statewide. The program offers patrons a way to get themselves safely home after a night at the local watering hole.

This year, Juneau/Lynn Canal CHARR is donating $3,000 in cab tokens to bars and liquor stores throughout Juneau to distribute on and around St. Patrick's Day.

"If we can persuade people not to drive by offering to pay for a cab ride, or even part of a ride, then it's more than worth it," said Leeann Thomas, a Juneau/Lynn Canal CHARR member.

Thomas, owner of the Triangle Club, expects an even greater response this year than last, when around 60 people received a free ride home on St. Patrick's Day.

Juneau patrons can inquire about the tokens with the bartenders at their local watering hole, who will determine the amount of tokens, worth either $1 or $5, needed to get them home. Tokens are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
