Recalled blood thinner used in state hospitals

ANCHORAGE - A blood thinner that has been recalled was used in Alaska hospitals.

The blood thinner has been linked to deaths and acute allergic reactions among patients undergoing heart surgery and kidney dialysis in the Lower 48.

In recent months, the blood thinner was administered to hospital patients in Alaska, state health officials said.

But state epidemiologist John McLaughlin said there have been no reports that the blood thinner heparin, which originated from the drug-maker Baxter International, has caused any problems in Alaska.
