Alaska cracks down on wood boilers near school

Posted: Sunday, March 13, 2011

FAIRBANKS — Alaska state officials have cited the owner of two outdoor wood boilers installed in 2008 across the street from a Fairbanks elementary school.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Fairbanks officials have installed a new ventilation system at Woodriver Elementary School to filter the particulate matter from the boilers.

Parents, teachers and other residents are angry about the wood smoke.

The Department of Environmental Conservation issued a nuisance abatement order Thursday that says the owner has to discontinue the nuisance. If that doesn’t happen, officials of the department say, the action could lead to a suit or a misdemeanor fine.
