I don't really know what to think about the road at this moment. I am a 19-year-old student that is attending the local alternative school. One day my class and I attended the open house at Centennial Hall where they had displays of different alternatives on the road plan. Alaska Department of Transportation representatives were there to answer questions that needed to be answered.
When I first got there I was thinking about the alternative that was most preferred. Are they really going to go with one of these plans? I'm neutral on this issue because there are both good things and bad things about this plan. Building the road would be a good thing because you can leave whenever you want, but the problem is the weather in the winter when it starts getting really nasty.
I asked one of the representatives "Will this be a lose-lose situation if we build a road?" and he answered "yes." I thought it was interesting that he agreed with my question. I asked him because if they build the road, the Alaska Marine Highway System will lose money. Also, building this road and maintenance is going to cost a bundle.
But if they do build a road, I guess everyone will just have to adapt to this road out of Juneau. The ferry riders have to do something else for their traveling plans. Building this road would open up more doors for Juneau's future and Juneau residents.
